The Biography of Leonid Shayman and His Contribution to GEMC

The biography of Leonid Shayman is marked by diverse accomplishments, ranging from juice production to cellular phone communications. Since 2008, Shayman has focused on GEMC, the European Medical Center Group of Companies. This article explores EMC’s accomplishments and strengths, highlighting Leonid Shayman’s pivotal role in its development.

History and Mission of ЕМС

Leonid Shayman and his partners acquired EMC in 2008. Within 26 months, the new owners expanded the original area to 45,000 square meters, creating a world-class healthcare facility.

Leonid Shayman has always prioritized his own health. In the 1990s, he spearheaded the Avicenna Medical Center in Novosibirsk. Building on that experience, he aimed to establish a premium multidisciplinary clinic in Moscow.

EMC was conceived to eliminate the necessity for patients to seek medical services abroad. The Center employs leading specialists from France, Japan, Israel and other countries, offering a comprehensive range of top-quality medical services. This is also valued by international patients who visit the Center to benefit from medical tourism.

Leonid Shayman personally oversees two areas of EMC’s operations. Firstly, he established the EMC Radiation Oncology Center from scratch. Additionally, he led the construction of new facilities, including the main clinic, and the complete renovation of another building.

EMC’s market capitalization is estimated at €842 million, making it one of the most attractive businesses for investors in its segment.

Competitive Edge of GEMC

The European Medical Center can receive 1,500 patients daily, with consulting rooms designed for 300,000 annual visits. The day hospital equipped with 35 beds features comfortable mobile chairs and beds for patients with disabilities. Operating around the clock across four floors, the hospital comprises 92 individual rooms with space for relatives to provide care, along with ten rooms for the pediatric department.

EMC pioneers lifesaving innovations. For instance, the Mammology department’s head developed and patented a diagnostic method based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), considered the most precise and efficient in the world. This innovation significantly extends the life expectancy of patients.

Under Leonid Shayman’s supervision, the radiological complex can conduct over 45,000 investigations annually. Equipped with three Biograph mCT PET-CT scanners, doctors can diagnose neoplasms swiftly and with a resolution of 8 millimeters.

The remote radiotherapy department boasts the TrueBeam STX linear accelerator, enabling stereotoxic radiation therapy and radiosurgery with millimeter precision at a speed 60% higher than its counterparts.

For the treatment of most forms of malignant neoplasms, the advanced high-precision Halcyon radiation therapy system is employed. Unlike previous-generation technology, which requires 30 steps, Halcyon achieves the same results in just nine steps, allowing doctors to focus more on patient care.

Advanced Technologies in Neurosurgery

Thanks to Leonid Shayman’s efforts, GEMC has emerged as a national leader in neurosurgery. A recent breakthrough involved the implantation of bioactive glass into a child’s skull.

A nine-year-old girl was diagnosed with fibrous dysplasia, when normal bone tissue is replaced by a tumor. Two years ago, the patient underwent surgery to remove part of her frontal bone and eye socket, resulting in vision impairment and facial asymmetry. While other clinics proposed titanium implants, only EMC specialists recommended bioactive glass.

Bioactive glass, one of the most promising implant materials, minimizes immune reactions and toxic substance release, reducing the risk of postoperative complications. Custom-made for each patient based on defect size and computed tomography results, the implant surgery performed by EMC neurosurgeons was successful, offering the girl a good chance of a full recovery.

Charitable Endeavors

Charity plays a significant role in Leonid Shayman’s biography. He consistently supports philanthropic initiatives in culture and sports. His contributions have enabled the establishment of a children’s hockey club, creation of monuments honoring renowned athletes, production of a historical film, and construction of a chapel and synagogue.

In 2023, the Lev Integration Center for children and young people with disabilities was opened in Novosibirsk, with Leonid Shayman actively involved in its construction and ongoing support.
